Description
The project generally consisted of design, permitting, bidding, and construction phase services for a 1,600 SF masonry pumping station building and 22,072 LF of 24-inch supply and transmission mains. The newly designed pump station exterior architecturally disguised as a new commercial building to blend into the surroundings. Pumping equipment included four (4) new Peerless single-stage, double-suction, horizontal split-case centrifugal pumps (high flow/low head) capable of supplying 9.3 MGD of finished water to the City’s 2.0 MG Neffsville storage tank. Each pump is controlled by an 18-pulse variable frequency drives. The pump station included a 425 gallon sodium hypochlorite tank, feed system, emergency shower, and telemetry controls.
The dedicated 22,072 LF of 24-inch supply and transmission main was mainly routed through the heavily developed residential portion of Manheim Township, which required many utility crossings.
ARRO began by securing topographical survey and basemapping at a scale of 1 inch equals 20 feet to prepare the water main design. Existing utility information was gathered and added to the basemapping. The new 12-inch diameter water main route was selected in a way to reduce impacts to vehicular traffic and mitigate interferences with existing underground utilities. Fifty-nine new water services to residents and businesses along the water main route were identified and incorporated into the design.
Drawings and specifications were developed and permit submissions were forwarded to PennDot (HOP) and the Lancaster County Conservation District (E&S).
The design was completed in early November and the City of Lancaster received bids on December 19, 2012.
